What You Can Do If A Dental Emergency Strikes

We all know what to do in case of a general emergency- call 911. But what should you do in case of an accident leading to a dental emergency? Who can you call and what can you do to provide immediate relief to the problem before you’re able to get to a dentist near you? At West Humber Dentistry in Rexdale, Ontario, M9V 4N4 we’ve put a few tips together to help you know what to do in the most common dental emergencies.

Knocked Out Tooth

If your tooth gets knocked out, try to place it back in the hole in the gum without touching the root if possible. If you can’t, try to keep it moist by placing it between the cheek and gum or in a cup of milk. Get to a family dentist Etobicoke near you immediately. According to The Cleveland Clinic, the tooth will have the highest chance of being saved if it’s returned to its socket by a dentist within one hour of being knocked out.

Cracked Tooth

The American Dental Association recommends immediately rinsing the tooth with warm water. Place cool compresses on the face to reduce any swelling on the affected side. See a dentist in Rexdale as soon as possible.

Lost Filling

If you lose a filling, fill the hole in the tooth with a piece of sugarless gum or over-the-counter dental cement. This will help protect the tooth until you’re seen by your dentist.

Toothache

First, rinse the mouth with warm water. Then gently use dental floss to remove any debris that may be lodged between the affected teeth. If you’re experiencing swelling press a cold compress against the affected side.Call your dentist as soon as you can.

Soft-tissue Injuries

If you injure your tongue, cheek, gums, or lips, it can result in pain and bleeding, here’s what you can do:

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water (dilute ½ teaspoon of table salt in 8 oz of water)

  • Apply pressure to the bleeding area for 15-20 minutes with moist gauze or a tea bag

  • Hold a cold compress to the side of the mouth of the affected area for 5-10 minutes.

  • If the bleeding doesn’t stop, see your dentist immediately or go to the emergency room. Continue to hold pressure at the site of bleeding.

Accidents happen, but they can be managed with a few practical tips and the help of a dentist near you. If you are experiencing any dental emergency, please do not hesitate to call us here at dental clinic etobicoke, where we specialize in same-day treatment options and patient-friendly care.
